What can you expect from this 20-week sewing course?
Our course is structured in four learning phases:
Phase 1: Basic Sewing Techniques & Exploration
In this phase, you'll learn the essential basics of sewing. You'll become familiar with the parts and operation of the sewing machine, practice different stitches, and learn safe working methods. You'll discover the properties of various fabrics and practice basic seams like the straight seam, English seam, and French seam. By making simple projects like a zippered cushion cover and a tote bag, you'll develop control, insight, and a feel for textiles and construction.
Phase 2: Garment Making & Refining Techniques
Now you'll lay the foundation for garment production. You'll learn how to adapt patterns to your own measurements, choose fabrics, and process them according to the technical requirements of the design. You'll make your first garments: an A-line skirt, a stretch shirt, and a blouse. You'll develop skills in inserting sleeves, pockets, buttonholes, and elastic. You'll also learn to work with stretch fabrics and jersey, which requires precision and knowledge of suitable stitches and needles.
Phase 3: Advanced Techniques & Larger Projects
In this phase, you'll delve deeper into more complex garments and advanced techniques. You'll make custom-made trousers, including waistbands, zippers, and fit adjustments. You'll also learn how to neatly integrate lining into garments and how to work with special materials like silk and satin. You'll delve into decorative finishes like pleats, bias tape, and ruffles, giving your work a professional and personal touch.
Phase 4: Custom Design & Finishing
You'll now apply all your knowledge to an independent final project. You'll design a garment of your choice, draft the pattern yourself, and choose the right fabrics. You'll work independently on sewing, finishing, and perfecting your design. In the final weeks, you'll complete your project with professional styling and present your creation during a closing ceremony, including a photoshoot and certificate presentation. This forms the starting point for your portfolio as a maker or aspiring seamstress.
